708 - Use of Animals in Research
The Animal Welfare Act of 1966, with numerous amendments thereto, specifies regulations for the use of animals in research. Prior to receiving an award involving the use of vertebrate animals in field or laboratory activities, an institution must provide an acceptable written assurance to the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) at the National Institutes of Health. That assurance must indicate that the institution is complying with the Animal Welfare Act and has a committee appointed by the chief executive officer to provide oversight of its animal care program.
