NIH initially developed an online extramural invention information management system, iEdison, which stands for Interagency Edison. The system was named for the American inventor Thomas Alva Edison. The iEdison system was deployed in October 1995. It became the first web-based electronic system in the federal government to support administrative requirements relating to intellectual property including inventions and patents that were developed using federal grant funding.
