While grant funding for most federal programs across the government are experiencing massive cuts, one important program is touting a funding increase, which can help ensure the food we eat is safe.

The Department of Agriculture this week announced that it would provides a funding increase of $14.5 million in reimbursements to states for meat and poultry inspection programs to enable states to oversee reviews to ensure products are safe for consumption. However, because this assistance is not long-term, the agency is urging Congress to continue funding critical state meat and poultry inspection programs.

The National Association of State Department of Agriculture (NASDA) applauded the funding increase and stressed that these inspection program “are vital to maintaining safe and resilient food systems,” especially for small and medium-sized producers and processors. “Increasing the reimbursement rate for states participating in this cooperative agreement ensures that more efficient processing options for local livestock producers remain in operation, especially for smaller farms, said NASDA Chief Executive Officer Ted McKinney. “ We will continue to advocate for Congress to appropriate this essential funding. This investment helps safeguard consumers, supports farmers and ensures that state-inspected meat and poultry continue to reach American dinner tables efficiently and safely.”

True, this program does have its merits and the increased federal reimbursements are valid. Now, if only the administration could deem it worthwhile to provide increased funding for all of the other many important grant programs nationwide.
