NLC Show Strong Support for Bipartisan Infrastructure Package

While many across the nation are waiting to see what actions Congress may take towards the proposed bipartisan infrastructure package, one group of heavily involved stakeholders aimed to make a bold statement showing its support for it.
The proposal, which would include some $600 billion in new spending for transportation, environmental, broadband, workforce and other federally funded projects, is facing a great deal of opposition from Senate Republicans. Therefore, the National League of Cities (NLC) this week sent a letter to Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Reps. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) urging their support for the package, noting that it “streamlines investment directly to the local level and eliminates inefficient bureaucratic processes and puts every dollar to use quickly and efficiently.”
While the one-page introduction to NCL’s letter to Congress was relatively short, what followed was striking, and was somewhat reminiscent of the Declaration of Independence. The letter included 10 pages containing 400 names of local officials and organizations nationwide calling for the passage of the legislation.
“Infrastructure is a job worth doing, and local governments are ready to put in the work to rebuild America’s infrastructure,” the NCL letter stressed. “America’s cities, towns and villages are ready for Congress to come through with infrastructure programs that partner with local governments to get projects done. We can invest together in transportation, water, broadband and workforce training to keep America moving and create local jobs.”
We know were NLC stands on this issue; now we’ll wait to see how the proposal fares in a heavily divided Congress.
