In the hit movie “Back to the Future,” Michael J. Fox’s character Marty laments his plight saying, “If I only had more time,” and then it occurs to him that he is sitting in a time machine. When it comes to applying for federal fiscal year 2022 funding under the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) John R. Justice Formula Grant Program, states and territories have been given more time — even without a time machine involved.

DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) recently announced that the deadline date for applications for this program has been extended for the second time in a matter of weeks. The original deadline for applications was June 21. On June 16, DOJ announced that it was extending the program deadline. It recently again notified eligible applicants about another extension, enabling them to submit proposals to Grants.gov by July 15 or through DOJ’s JustGrants system by July 20.

The John R. Justice Grant Program provides student loan repayment assistance for local, state and federal public defenders and local and state prosecutors who commit to extended service in those roles. This program furthers DOJ’s mission by helping recipients recruit and retain qualified attorneys to enhance the efficacy of the criminal justice system. Eligible applicants are states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.

DOJ plans to make 56 two-year awards under the $4 million program. The period of performance begins on Oct 1. The agency has calculated a minimum base allocation for each recipient, which will be supplemented by an amount proportional to that state or territory’s share of the national population. DOJ reserves the right to reallocate unrequested funding in any fiscal year for use by participating states and to reduce future awards by amounts unexpended from the prior year, all based upon such reasonable formulas as is necessary to extend accessibility to program funding.

Stakeholders seeking DOJ grant funding should keep an eye on BJA’s announcement webpage to learn if deadlines for other programs are extended. For example, the agency also notified recently that the deadline to apply for consideration to be part of DOJ’s National Public Safety Partnership, enables cities experiencing high rates of violent crime to partner with DOJ and to receive intensive, coordinated training and technical assistance from DOJ to support and enhance public safety and community violence intervention strategies, has been extended to July 15, 2022.
