Many older music buffs are well-aware of the classic The Who song, “Who Are You?” It gained new life in recent years as the theme song for the show “CSI.” Over the next couple of weeks, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Department of the Treasury will be emphasizing that grant recipients users of Treasury’s ASAP.gov financial and information system must take new steps to prove who they are.

To log into ASAP.gov, Treasury notes that recipient organizations will be required to enroll and register multi-factor authentication credentials with ID.me no later than Sept. 15. After that date, award recipient users will not be able to log in to ASAP.gov until they register with ID.me. Treasury has provided a video and a step-by-step guide to assist entities in the ID.me registration process.

ID.me is a trusted provider specializing in digital identity protection, giving users secure access to applications. The new process will replace the single sign-on process.

If a recipient organization currently uses the same ASAP.gov user ID for multiple employees, Treasury states that due to security reasons, each user with the organization should have his or her own ASAP.gov user ID and password to access ASAP.gov. “The implementation of multi-factor authentication is specifically designed to make shared access nearly impossible,” the agency notes. “This is a good time to assign access and appropriate roles for your organization's users. To do this, you will need to discontinue your shared use of credentials, establish your own individual ASAP.gov user ID and password within the application, and then create your own ID.me account.”

If a user currently has an ID.me account, he or she does not need to create a new account. Instead, this user will need to add his or her ASAP.gov email address to his or her existing ID.me account, making it the primary email address. Users with questions about the ID.me registration process may contact the ID.me Help Desk for help with your account.

Time is running out for making this transition. Take steps — well, ASAP! — to ensure you can continue to access ASAP.gov.
